Earl Grey: the Story of Our Relationship

Do you remember the first time you tried Earl Grey tea with its distinctive bergamot flavour? For me, it was a revelation. This memorable event took place at a Pioneer Camp in the early 1990s, when my parents sent me a letter with a few Twinings Earl Grey tea bags tucked into the envelope. The aroma was so unique, soft and captivating that I don't even recall the contents of the letter. It was probably about love. But the lasting impression for me was the taste of bergamot. My affinity grew stronger as I explored different variations, not just with milk but also with a hint of mint, added to the intense Tetley tea bags for example. Fast forward to France in our first year, where guests seated at a long table praised my tea highly. After a few disappointing experiences with various brands, I eventually found a wonderful tea from Teapigs here in the UK. Their Earl Grey range offers both strong and light versions, delicate with blue flowers, just as the "medium premium" segment should be. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the legendary Mariage Frères tea shop. Despite being French, it's often noted as one of the best places in London to purchase tea as a gift. While making my purchase, I was surrounded by chaos – two hungry children demanding burgers! It was hard to focus on the wall of mysterious jars behind the counter. I didn't want to make a mistake. In the end, I impulsively chose Earl Grey Imperiale and Earl Grey French Blue, and my joy knew no bounds. Deep breath, slow exhale, and relax... Aromatherapy and a sprinkle of optimism in a delightful cup. The simple things are the best.
